Drive
Holy mother fucking shitballs.
With that professional outburst out of the way. I can get back to being a lot more rational. I have been planning on posting something about this movie on tumblr but never had enough time.
My mate Ollie recommended me this film for a while and I was never really too fussed on it. Baring in mind though, I have never seen a film that Ollie has recommended that I haven’t thought was the greatest thing to be put in front of my inexperienced media student eyes.
This is the guy who sat me down to watch Pulp Fiction and Fight Club ALL IN ONE NIGHT.
And i damn near fainted.
So I sat down with my girlfriend, who also has EPIC film taste, to watch this. We started making jokes and doing the usual thing we do:
Me/Becky: OMG its that guy?
The Other: What guy?
Me/Becky: He was in….OH FUCKING HELL WHAT WAS IT!?!?!’
Me: *IMDB’s* he was in “x”
Both: OOOOOOO
and then continue watching the film.
After a bit of time had passed, the jokes stopped, the iPhones were put away and we sat in silence. Every single bit about this film is amazing, I’m struggling to cohere my thoughts into a well written piece of text that represents how I feel but its like trying to catch a snowflake. Ill try and be brief
Plot
The plot is fantastic, Ryan Gosling (the reason i was less inclined to watch this film as he’s a hollywood heartthrob and thus i believe he can’t act) plays a getaway driver for hire and then gets given a larger job, a love interest and he is put to the test.
Cinematography
The filming in this ….film…is fantastic. That’s what’s made me fall in love. Not only does this film have an amazing plot and cast (it has Ron ‘Hellboy’ Perlman in it too) the camera work is PHENOMENAL. There is not a single shot out of place and this made me truly connect in this film because it appeals to me not only as an entertainment piece but as a constructed film using techniques that I LOVE to portray certain emotions during a scene.
Music
Holy crap. This might be my favourite thing about this film. There is one piece of music that plays throughout, a really moving string instrumental that is so iconic and well-known. Saying that, i can’t really remember the name of it off the top of my head. You’ll know it when you hear it. But it is placed at the EXACT right times in this film. The final song is also epic.
So in summary, this film is now in my top 3 films. I’m not one of those people that OVERLY jizzes over Fight Club and Pulp Fiction. I didn’t go away from them going “wow….wow…that was one of the best films i’ve ever seen”. Admittedly they WERE, but i didn’t see the need to say it. I did with Drive….and I am 100% honest.
If you haven’t seen this film, you need to.
